Big East Coach of Year takes over BU mens soccer Schenectady native Paul Marco guided West Virginia program for six years Binghamton University has hired Paul Marco as its mens head soccer coach, the school announced today. Marco comes directly from West Virginia University, where he coached the Mountaineers for the past six seasons all in the Big East Conference. Marco replaces Hristos Dimitriou, who coached the team for the past nine seasons. His best season was in 1999, when West Virginia went 13-5-1 and received the third seed in the Big East Championship tournament. That year, Marco was selected by his peers as Big East Coach of the Year. His 1998 team also advanced to the conference tournament, posting an 11-8-1 mark. Marco holds a 47-62-4 record in six seasons as head coach. This past fall WVU was 5-11 overall, with eight losses coming by a slim one-goal margin. In the season-finale, Marcos Mountaineers played eventual NCAA semifinalist St. Johns to a 2-1 defeat. The Big East continues to be one of the strongest soccer conferences in the county, boasting four top-20 teams in 2001. Prior to taking over the head coaching reigns in 1997, Marco served as WVUs assistant coach from 1992-95, helping lead the program to an Atlantic 10 conference championship and NCAA tournament berth in 1992. A former Division I player for West Virginia, Marco led the program to one of its finest seasons in school history in 1990. His 12 points steered the team to a 12-5-1 record the best mark in 23 years. Marco graduated cum laude from West Virginia in 1991 with a bachelors degree in physical education. He is teacher certified in grades K-12. Marco also received his masters degree from the University in 1994 in physical education/ athletic coaching He holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma, a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) B License, and has been a member of the NSCAA national staff for six years. In that capacity, Marco has taught various levels of the NSCAA academy curriculum courses, and has published numerous articles. Most recently, he served as vice president of the Big East soccer coaches for three years. Marco takes over a BU program that went 2-17 in 2001 the teams first Division I campaign. Binghamton will play its first season in the America East Conference next fall. |
