For Immediate Release: July 15, 2002 Contact: John Hartrick Golfer Hendrickson shoots even-par 72 in first round of U.S. Publinks Championship
BU junior-to-be Keith Hendrickson fired a sizzling 31 on the back nine to rally back to even-par in his Monday opening round of the 77th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Washington, Michigan. He stands in a tie for 31st place among 156 entering Tuesday's round. The top 64 golfers after Tuesday's 18 holes will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday at the 7,001-yard Orchards Golf Club.
Hendrickson struggled out of the gate, shooting 41 on the front side, including a bogey-bogey-bogey finish. But he made a stunning comeback on the back nine, however, dropping in five birdies to produce the lowest nine-hole score in the entire field. Hendrickson birdied both par-3s and the 523-yard par-5 15th hole. He then completed his round with back-to-back birdies on the 453-yard par-4 17th and 413-yard par-4 18th hole. Defending champion Chez Reavie, a former All-American at Arizona State who earned entry into The Master's with his title last year, shot a 73. Hendrickson tees off at 1:09 Tuesday afternoon, and will play the back-nine first.
