Robert Negron '72
Induction Class of 2005

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Negron played baseball at Binghamton from 1968-71. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Spanish in 1972 and went on to earn his master's degree in supervision and administration from Pace University in 1974.

A versatile player who lined up at catcher, outfield and second base during his career, Negron was a captain and team leader whose passion and determination for the game served as inspiration to his teammates.

As a hitter, Negron has no equal in school history. He is the only baseball player in the program's first 49 years to achieve a career batting average of .400 or higher. He accumulated 60 hits in 149 collegiate at-bats for a .403 average and led the team in hitting in three of his four seasons.

In his freshman season, Negron hit a school-record .455, which was ranked eighth in the entire nation for small colleges (Division II-III).

One year later, he switched from catcher to center field and batted .391.

As a junior, he played second base and hit .314, striking out just once in 11 games, while batting third in the lineup.

In 1971, Negron was batting a lofty .458 before a knee injury cut short his final collegiate season. Still, his RBI per game pace carried Binghamton to a then-school record 10 wins.

In his four-year career, Negron struck out only 10 times.
