MARTY FRIEDMAN '75 A native of North Merrick, NY, Marty Friedman played soccer at Binghamton from 1971-74. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics in 1975. Friedman, a team captain and four-year starter, led Binghamton teams to back-to-back NCAA tournament berths in 1973 and 1974 - the program's first-ever national tournament invitations. The 1973 squad advanced to the quarterfinals of the College Division Championship, posting the first NCAA tournament victory of any Binghamton team in any sport. Friedman-led teams also won the program's first ECAC Championship in 1972, and its first SUNYAC Championship in 1974. A forward and midfielder, Friedman was selected as an All-American in 1974 after his 11-4 Colonials reached the NCAA round of 16 and earned a national ranking of ninth. During that season, he tallied 13 goals, and was also named to the first-team All-SUNYAC and All-New York State squads. In 1975, he was drafted by Denver of the North American Soccer League - the 22nd player selected overall. During his career, Friedman contributed 31 goals and 30 assists for 92 points, placing him third on the all-time list. He holds the school record for assists in a game after setting up five goals in a 1971 win over Utica College. His 30 assist mark is second in program history, and his 31 goals rank fourth. During his four years, Binghamton enjoyed a winning percentage of 72%, with 10 or more victories each season. Friedman was honored with the John Bilos Award in 1975. |
