For Immediate Release: September 25, 2000 Golfer Adam Fuchs to appear in Sports Illustrated Sophomore golfer Adam Fuchs (Plainview, N.Y./JFK-Plainview High), the University's reigning "Athlete of the Year," will appear in the October 2 issue of Sports Illustrated, becoming just the second BU athlete to grace the pages of SI - one of America's most renowned sports publications. Fuchs will be featured on the Faces in the Crowd page of SI's Golf Plus! segment - a subscriber-only insert dedicated to coverage of amateur and professional golf. Fuchs attracted the interest of the magazine after winning three consecutive tournaments to open his second collegiate season. At the season-opening Elmira Invitational, he dropped in four birdies en route to an even-par 71 and medalist honors. Two days later, his 2-under-par 70 capped a 72-70 performance at the Cornell-Colgate Invitational. Among 120 golfers, Fuchs was the lone player to break par. The third tournament win was the most impressive, however. Fuchs fired a 3-under-par 67 on the historic Yale Golf Course to become the first Binghamton golfer to win the prestigious Yale Invitational. Trailing by seven strokes after the first of three rounds, Fuchs battled back and won the top honor with a birdie on the final hole. His play last spring and this fall carried the golf team to a school record seven consecutive tournament wins - a streak that was covered by Golfweek magazine - the nation's most prominent college golf publication. After the first six rounds of the 2000 season, Fuchs has maintained a scoring average of 71.5. Former BU five-time NCAA triple jump champion Monique Hacker appeared in the "Faces in the Crowd" section in 1996. Former men’s basketball coach Dick Baldwin also was featured in the magazine in 1994. |
