Junior Adam Fuchs (Plainview, N.Y./JFK-Plainview) carded rounds of 74-75=149 to defeat a host of Hartford Hawks and win medalist honors at the America East Championship, contested April 29-30 at the 6,498-yard Cyprian Keyes Golf Course (par 72) in Boylston, Mass. On the final hole of the 36-hole championship, Fuchs drained a short birdie putt — his third of the day — to win the title by one stroke over Jeff Campbell of team champion Hartford.
Fuchs trailed by three strokes after his opening-round 74, but dropped in two birdies in his first four holes on Monday, and went on to win his second tournament of the year and eighth in his stellar collegiate career. He was named to the all-conference first team, as were the other top-5 finishers. Just two days after defeating Hartford by 10 strokes at the Rhode Island Invitational, the Bearcats shot rounds of 311-309=620 to finish 16 strokes behind the Hawks (604). Vermont (648) and Boston University (670) rounded out the field. Senior Adam Singer (Clymer, N.Y.) concluded his three-year career at Binghamton with rounds of 79-75=154 — good for sixth place. Junior J.B. Bump (Windsor, N.Y.) shaved five strokes off his opening round to close with a 75, and placed seventh overall. Each golfer earned second team all-conference honors. Fuchs, Singer and Bump shared the low round in the field for Monday (75). The Bearcats finished their inaugural Division I season with an overall record of 145-23 (.863). Coached by John Affleck, the team won two invitationals, and finished among the top-4 in nine of 10 tournaments. Binghamton was ranked as high as fourth in District I, with the top three teams earning bids to the NCAA Championship. | ||||
