BU baseball sweeps Pace, finishes second in conference

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior catcher Stephen Kohan (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) drilled a leadoff home run in the seventh inning to snap a 1-1 tie and give Binghamton a 2-1 win and a sweep of visiting Pace University in a New York State Baseball Conference. The Bearcats (17-23-1, 5-5 NYSBC) won the opener, 16-6. Pace is 16-27 overall, and finished 3-7 in the NYSBC.

Junior pitcher Greg Sousa (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) and Pace pitcher Keith Makowski (Bayonne, N.J.) were locked in a dual, with each pitcher allowing just four hits and one run. Kohan changed that in the top of the seventh inning, however, depositing Makowski’s first offering over the left field wall for his second home run of the season. Sousa then retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

In the opener, senior shortstop Tim Macko (Liverpool, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored, and BU put up 16 runs on 15 hits, scoring in every inning but the eighth. Macko belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning, added an RBI single in the sixth, and a sacrifice fly in the seventh, raising his team-high RBI total to 42 on the season. Junior catcher Kyle Loucks (Johnson City, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI, freshman right fielder T.J. Kowalchuk (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and junior designated hitter J.T. Martin (Forest Hills, N.Y./Stuyvesant) went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior pitcher Jeff Montani (Liverpool, N.Y.) earned his fifth win of the season, scattering four hits and one earned run through eight innings.

With the two wins, Binghamton clinched a share of second place with New York Tech in the conference. The Bearcats, however, will be awarded the #3 seed for the upcoming tournament, since New York Tech (5-5) swept BU earlier in the season. The six-team tournament will be hosted by C.W. Post and New York Tech on May 12-14. Top-seeded Stony Brook and Tech will receive first-round byes. The official tournament pairings will be released on Monday.
