Binghamton University has once again earned distinction for the academic achievement of its student-athletes. The America East Conference released its Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll as well as the Commissioner’s Honor Roll today, and Binghamton led the league in both categories.

The Bearcats, in their first year of membership in the nine-school Division I conference, placed 168 athletes on the Academic Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) — well above runners-up New Hampshire (121) and Vermont (121). Binghamton also had the most representatives on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll (min. 3.5 GPA) with 77 athletes. Vermont was next with 61, followed by Maine (57) and New Hampshire (53).

In addition, Binghamton had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll as 168 out of 268 (63%) student-athletes received recognition. New Hampshire (58%) and Maine (51%) were the only other schools with more than half their total student-athletes named to the honor roll.

Binghamton also had the most individual recipients in eight different winter and spring sports. Leading the America East were Binghamton men’s basketball, women’s basketball, golf, women’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, baseball and softball.

The student-athletes were members of teams in the 15 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, baseball and softball.

America East members are University at Albany, Binghamton, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont.

In mid-July, America East will announce the winner of the 2001-02 Academic Cup, as well as the individual Scholar-Athlete Awards. The Academic Cup is awarded to the member school whose teams compiled the best combined grade-point average in conference-sponsored sports.
